A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has blamed the PPP/C central government and regional administration for their slow and inadequate response to the worsening health crisis in the Barima-Waini Region.
Three children in the Region have died and at least 43 are reported to have fallen ill as a result of contracting gastro-enteritis after consuming contaminated water. It is suspected that this was caused by the improper disposal of waste from mining activities.
APNU stated that the central government and regional administration are well aware of the problem which affects residents recurrently in riverine and hinterland communities.
APNU, therefore, called on the Minister of Health Dr Beri Ramsarran; Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Mr. Robert Persaud; Minister of Housing and Water Mr. Irfaan Ali and Minister of Local Government and Regional development Mr. Ganga Persaud to respond quickly to the crisis and to enforce environmental safety regulations to protect the lives of residents.
