On Tuesday 5th February 2013, at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr David A. Granger, MP, and APNU Shadow Ministers held a wide ranging consultative meeting with the President of the GTUC, Mr. Norris Witter, and the General Secretary, Mr. Lincoln Lewis, along with executive representatives from GTUC Affiliates.
The very frank and useful discussions focused on the current precarious state of Governance in Guyana, particularly the PPP/C Administration’s continuing and systematic programme of assault on Trade Union rights, including the failure to observe Collective Bargaining agreements; the continued state of lawlessness, due to the ignoring and subversion of the Constitutional and legal guarantees afforded to Guyanese workers; and the pauperisation of workers through low wages, the 16% VAT and the high cost-of-living.
Since it was evident that there is a coincidence of interest for ensuring that: the primacy of the National Assembly is respected; there is the restoration of good Governance; accountability by the Executive to the People of Guyana; and transparency in the dealings of the Administration, it was agreed that a strategic framework for cooperation and collaboration should be developed and implemented as a matter of urgency.
The Leader of the Opposition was accompanied by the Shadow Ministers responsible for Labour and Legal Affairs, Mr. Basil Williams; Finance and Development, Mr. Carl Greenidge; Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine; and Local Government and Regional Development, Mr. Ronald Bulkan; along with the Policy Adviser, Mr. E. Lance Carberry.
The President and General Secretary of the GTUC were accompanied by executive members of the GTUC and of the following Affiliates: the GWU; GLGOU; UGWU; UAAWU; GTU; GPSU; GPTWU; and ATGWU.
