The newly appointed Ambassador of the Argentine Republic, H.E. Luis A. Martino, paid a courtesy call today, Tuesday 21st May 2013, on the Leader of the Opposition and Chairman of APNU, Hon. Brigadier David A. Granger, MP, at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition. The Leader of the Opposition was accompanied by the Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Mrs. Deborah J. Backer, MP; and the Policy Adviser, Mr. E. Lance Carberry.
The Ambassador was welcomed by the Leader of the Opposition who provided an insight into the geographic and political orientation of Guyana, including the impact of the territorial claims by Venezuela and Suriname. The discussions were very cordial and wide ranging, including the historical, legal and political position of the Government of the Argentine Republic with respect to the Malvinas Islands. The Ambassador provided APNU representatives with a specially compiled dossier for information. In addition, the Ambassador informed the Leader of the Opposition of the decision by the Government of the Argentine Republic to provide extended technical and financial support, including international and local training, for Sports in Guyana, particularly Rugby and Ladies Hockey, from the level of schools, community clubs and the National Team.
