A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), today, held a series of picketing exercises around the country calling on President Donald Ramotar to announce a date for the holding of local government elections. Protest action was held in all six municipalities; Georgetown, Linden New Amsterdam, Rose Hall, Corriverton and Anna Regina.
In Georgetown, the picketing exercise was conducted outside of the Office of the President and was led by Leader of the Opposition, Brigadier David Granger. Brigadier Granger said that APNU would continue its campaign of protest until a date is announced for the holding of local government elections.
APNU pickets called on the President to do the following: Respect the Constitution of Guyana; Demand that the President issue the ‘commencement order’ to operationalize the Local Government Commission; Demand that the President assent to the Local Government(Amendment) Bill and that the President respect the people’s democratic right to elect their own representatives.
